Scottish Youth Hostelling Association (SYHA)

We have enjoyed worked with Scottish Youth Hostelling Association (SYHA) on a number of interesting projects.

It began in the summer of 2014 when SYHA commissioned us to produce a promotional video (above) about their ‘Give Us A Break’ project in association with sponsor Friends Provident.

The project involved 10 children from a Barnado’s group in Kilmarnock who participated in a a two-day programme to give them the experience of the great outdoors. The children took part in team skills, canoeing, mountain biking and bush crafts at Rowardennan, Loch Lomond

The purpose of the project is to provide these experiences to groups of children who wouldn’t normally get these opportunities due to their background and circumstances.

Since ‘Give Us A Break’ started in 2004 Provident has provided £280,000 of funding towards the costs, this has allowed over 3,000 young people from all over Scotland have been able to take part.

As we filmed the activities and got to know the children it was incredibly inspiring to record their journey and progress. Everyone learned new skills and managed the challenges in a very enthusiastic way. It was amazing to watch them learning, and to get pleasure from the outdoors, completing challenges, conquering fears and moving forward together as a team.

Press play on the film at the top of the page. It has been widely used to promote the experience to other groups throughout Scotland.

As well as that film we also produced a series of photographs to tell the story of the event which you can see opposite.

Our next project was one year later, summer 2015, photographing four of SYHA’s hostels in Scotland – Stirling, Rowardennan, Glasgow and Crianlarich for their brochures and website. Here are some of the photographs taken in those hostels.

Testimonial from SYHA

Paul took some great photos of our youth hostels, capturing the unique ‘personality’ of each one. On the videos for our youth programmes, he helped to shape the story and put everyone at ease, and we were really pleased with the results.
