This is one of 5 posters created for Skills Partnership to promote Rural Careers in the National Park.
The brief was to capture photographs that would represent different types of jobs available in the National Park. On face value not unlike other projects that we regularly work on, however there was one big difference, we wouldn’t be taking the photographs, instead that would be done by young people at Secondary Schools around Loch Lomond.
For Paul the project started on a very wet Monday morning in the National Park offices in Balloch. His first task was to provide the young people with a mini photography skills class, and then teach them about the process of capturing commercial photographs.
In small groups the children started to brainstorm how the photographs could look. Thinking carefully about what would catch their eye, what image would get their attention and spark some thoughts about the possibility of a rural career. We then jumped on a coach and went along the west side of Loch Lomond, visiting local businesses, including Luss Estates, The Loch Lomond Arms Hotel, The Inverbeg Caravan Park, The Carrick Golf Club and Spa and the National Park Rangers Office at Balloch Slipway.
You can see the young people in action, above right, as well as a subject that they photographed, above left.
As well as the photography aspect there were also work placements and a video production for the children to be kept busy.
The bank of images that were captured were ideal and made it easier for designer Mark Hutton, of Hutton Creative to produce the final posters that you see here.
The posters were unveiled for the first time at a glitzy awards ceremony at Cameron House Hotel where the young people collected awards for their excellent efforts, which we all felt were very well deserved. Their series of posters are now displayed in a number of schools to promote rural careers.
Well done to the young people involved they showed great enthusiasm and as you can see the end results are spot on.
